The old miser is
Barks most ingenious invention. Named after the world famous story "A Christmas
Carol" by Charles Dickens, Barks soon evolved his character in different
ways. Being stingy, although intrinsic to his character, soon became not
his only trait. A love affair (to Glittering Goldie) and an excitement
for long journeys to the ends of the world soon made him a multi-faceted
character. The moneybin became his home in which he not only amasses money
but from time to time takes a swim with the motto: "I dive around it like
a porpoise!" His life and times, based on Barks stories, have been researched
and made into a comic by Barks enthusiast and comic writer Don Rosa. His
first appearance was in the story "Christmas on Bear Mountain" (Donald
Duck Four Color 176) in 1947. In 1952 Uncle Scrooge got his own comic album
which was to become the most popular Disney comic ever. Uncle Scrooge received
a number of enemies: Magica de Spell, the
Beagle Boys, Flintheart Glomgold among others. His family tree is extensive
and so I name but a few: Donald Duck, Huey, Dewey and Louie Duck, Grandma
Duck, Gladstone Gander, Daisy Duck... His most important acquaintance is
the ingenious inventor Gyro Gearloose. (The picture on the left is from
