Magica de
Spell is one of Uncle Scrooge's arch rivals.
She appeared first in 1962. The story was called "The Midas Touch"
and filled Uncle Scrooge #36. She lives at the edge of the volcano Vesuvius
in Italy. Magica may very well be the first beautiful witch that ever existed,
but as we all know, beauty can be a curse, too. Barks once said: "Her good
looks gave her an extra element of power" With her charms and some more
powerful means (as Poof bombs) she tries to steal Uncle Scrooge's lucky
dime, the coin that the old duck earned first. With that coin the superstitious
witch wants to create the most powerful lucky charm on Earth. Initially
Magica was not planned to be a real witch but rather a woman who used science
to her advantage. The article "The Meaning of Magica" by Goeffrey Blum
(CBL of Uncle Scrooge Adventures #39) gives a very good look at the intriguing
powers of this woman! (The picture on the left is from The Midas Touch,
US #36)
