Carl Barks and the Calgary Eye Opener
Before Carl Barks started to draw his Ducks he worked for the Calgary Eye
Opener which was a men orientented magazine and featured a lot of sexually
and racially discriminating jokes. Even Carl Barks drew some of them and
they can certainly not be considered politically correct in today's definintion.
Still they are funny and most of them can be seen as the starting point
of Carl Barks' masterpiece incorporated in the Ducks. Hamiltion Comics
published a selection of his cartoons from the Calgary Eye Opener featuring
a foreword from Art Spiegelmann and the text from one of the most acclaimed
critical writers of Carl Barks' Disney comics in the Barks
Library, Geoffrey Blum. The edition is called "The Unexpurgated Carl
Barks" and for possible ordering please contact the Bruce Hamilton Company
